Chris Potter @Bimhuis

My good friend Peter Leung invited me and Niels Bijl for a concert of Chris Potter.

This is a little video I made of the concert.

Potter set a new standard for the saxophone. Anything is possible, as far as he's concerned. But I do miss soul in his playing. It's too far out there for my taste. It doesn't really connect with me. I hear it's fantastic, as fantastic as jazz saxophone gets. But I am only half a song fascinated by the technical skills of this man. After that I get bored. I would love to hear slow ballad in which he can only use one scale, no alterations and long tones.

Prijsvraag!

De runner-up:

Three sax geek tips

During our current Canada/US tour we gave a masterclass to the students of saxophone professor Tristan Deborba in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. It was a pleasure to exchange information with this enthusiastic saxophone class, and they all attended our concert the next day.

We adressed three general aspects of playing the saxophone which we find important.

1) How do you know how much mouthpiece to take in your mouth?
As a starting point we use this: look where the reed leaves the table of the mouthpiece. That is where the lower teeth should be. If you take too little mouthpiece the reed cannot vibrate freely because you are pressing it on the table. If you take too much mouthpiece you do not have sufficient control and the sound becomes too open and even squeeky. Experiment with this: try to find both extremes and look for the soft spot.

2) When are you supposed to use 2/TC and TA/P (side/front C and (side/front) Bb)?
The basic rules are very simple, but we do think they are extremely important for a flawless technique (Please note: in the end, please use whatever is more practical for you. These are just basic guidelines):
Bb: Usually with petit, except before or after a B or a C. Although in certain cases you do use P (petit or bis key) before or after a C, like the second note of the famous Creston Sonate. In this case it's easier to use P because of the G after.
C: Use TC (side C) before or after a B.
Note: Do not use TC before or after a Bb played with P, the intonation of C with 1 P TC is unacceptibly low (try this). (Do not tell anyone: we do use this fingering sometimes (!)  the runs are so fast that you cannot hear that it's out of tune.)

Note: Olivier does not agree with the above totally. He believes it is more practical to use TA just before or after a C. For example, he plays the F major scale with P.

Please let uw know what you think is more practical on our Facebook page!

3) About the independence of air pressure and technique.
One of the hardest things of playing the sax, or any other wind instrument, is disconnecting the breath from the rest of your technique. When you move your fingers, the air and the air column shouldn't change. It should feel like someone else presses the keys of your horn. In fact, you could practice it like this: ask a friend to finger a difficult register change standing behind you, while you blow. For example, tre the register change from C# to middle D, which is one of the hardest register changes. Also try not the change embouchure while doing this, it also changes the airflow.
In the end, saxophone playing is about doing less. The air pressure should be constant, even when playing staccato. But everything else works best when relaxed.

If you have more questions for us, please post them on my Facebook page.

Almost off to Russia

Almost off to Russia with Amstel. I have been in Russia twice: Nizy Novgorod and St. Petersburg. Both were great trips. The concerts were always well visited (full houses!) and the people friendly.

But first tomorrow a concert with Berry van Berkum on the organ. We will play a minimal concert with lots of new stuff and an improvisation.

Terry Riley is one of my personal discoveries of the last years. With the quartet we play his Good Medicin, which is a great work: Video

I will play Riley's Dorian Reeds tomorrow. This is Terry himself playing it: Video

I had a talk with my fellow Splendor member Claron McFadden yesterday and I tried to explain her why Mr. Riley interests me so much: He's free. He's not particularly 'good', but he hits me. I am not sure how. Also his minimal style is not conceptual at all. It is a collection of experiences and music that he together intuitively. Sure, it's repetitive, but not dogmatic. Gotta love it. I sure do.

Here's a Spotify link to Terry's famous Lisbon concert. I was fascinated by this concert for several weeks. https://play.spotify.com/album/1YiDXOCXadDErfdqbMuKtI Let me know what you think!

Then the weekend off and away we are!

Joel Meyerowitz - Out of the Ordinary

http://prod-images.exhibit-e.com/www_houkgallery_com/e9687464.jpg

2. 1975, New York City

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mcv7uiuBKq1r146zvo1_1280.jpg

3. 1975 New York City

http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Arts/Arts_/Pictures/2009/6/4/1244105409981/Joel-Meyerowitz-005.jpg

http://25.media.tumblr.com/e1f6b097b940be7d12d6ad924e0ec7f6/tumblr_mnddivlFTm1ss4bfxo1_1280.jpg

4. 1976, New York City

http://streetreverbmagazine.com/files/2011/02/02.jpg

5. 1977, St. Louis

http://image2.evene.fr/img/galerie/1-13167-G4108.jpg

Deze foto ontroert me.

End exams

I was present as a jury member at some great end exams in Amsterdam, students of Arno Bornkamp.

This was the master exam of Michael Grycko, a Polish saxophonist, who is a tenor saxophonist (we always need more of them) composed his own music and played with a great quartet

News letter June 2013 online now

Democratic Camera, a selection

Ik ben een groot liefhebber van fotoboeken. De meeste haal ik uit de bieb. Ik heb nu een paar weken Eggleston's 'the Democratic Camera' in huis. Een prachtig boek. Sommige foto's ontroeren me.

http://arttattler.com/Images/NorthAmerica/NewYork/Whitney/William%20Eggleston/18-eggleston_karco.jpg

Untitled, Election Eve, 1976.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0Hwnm-sZi1Y/TtSkSITGF3I/AAAAAAAAWq8/Ne4lTRy30LA/s1600/william-eggleston-election-eve-atthe-gagosian-gallery-paris-2011-www.lylybye.blogspot.com_1.jpg

Prachtig. NB de blaadjes linksonder, mooie touch.

Untitled, from Los Alamos
http://media.commercialappeal.com/media/img/photos/2011/01/15/03_tail_fin_t607.JPG

Untitled, from los Alamos, 1973

Untitled, from Troubled Waters, 1971-1973
http://www.artwhatson.com.au/images/members/0021609/Museum-of-Contemporary-Art-Australia-William-Eggleston-Untitled-from-Troubled-Waters-0097805_130226115217.jpg

Fontys classical saxophone day

At the Fontys Conservatory Andreas and me organized a classical sax day,

We did two workshops about old saxes and a brief history of the evolution of the classical saxophone sound.

With the whole group of participants we played Eduardo Marturet's Canto LLano.

This was the rehearsal

Andreas and me played a short recital on two baris:

Leclair excerpt

Knee Gas (on) by Ryan Brown (world premier of the two baris version)/ This piece was a discovery for me and I hope to play it many times more. It was written for the fabulous bass clarinet duo 'Sqwonk'.

The performance of the Marturet (2)should have been a flash mob type of thing outside. But the weather didn't permit it.

Wow, what an energetic night! and I did a great discovery.

The KKBB played 'Play Beck', music by Beck, from Songreader, an 'album' only published as sheet music.

As well as the ver charming Deborah Carter and more video

Tini Thomsen is alto sax and bass clarinet in the band. She played a poetic intro

And my discovery was Marike Jager. Turns out she is a fellow Lomo Amigo, but also posses a fantastic voice with great emotional impact. This video was very touching.

I suggest you go see the KKBB at the Amsterdam Bimhuis whenever you can, not only because the Bimhuis is the nicest concert hall in the Netherlands, but also because it will be a night you will never forget. Even when I am not a guest :-)

Dutch Classical Talent Award 2013

In November I already had the privilege to be a jury member of the first selection rounds for the Dutch Classical Talent Award 2014. Now I got to be a jury for the finals of the 2013 edition.

I had great fun. It is fantastic to be able to have some significance for the future of the classical music field in the Netherlands. And of course I am very happy that a saxophone quartet own the 2013 prize. Congrats Berlage Saxophone Quartet!

Princepiration discussion

I just had a discussion with a friend/colleague about the reason I made Princepiration.

I got several good reviews and one really bad one. Well, bad... They say it's a sign of creativity to have polarized reviews.

True or not: I made the album to see if I could make an album for my friends with music that written today. Music that connects with the world as it is now. I often play contemporary music, but I have noticed that my friends (or people of my generation) have troubles 'understanding' this music. And that's fine, of course. I do what I do. With Princepration though, I wanted to make something that has an entrance for people of my generation. I asked several composers to write a new piece which s inspired by an element from a Prince tune. The result was original music with a hook: Prince. And I think the result is very interesting. And it seemed to have created a connection to 'classical music' for many people.Which was what I wanted. Play well written 'new' 'classical music' without doing concessions for a broader audience.

There was a misunderstanding that I wanted to do concessions to broaden my audience. But I didn't. And I surely didn't want to say that 'normal' contemporary music is out of touch with its audience. I play and recorded that kind of music often and I do not want to limit myself. I needed to make an album like this. I play all kinds of music, actually, I make a point of this. And I wanted to involve my friends and other like minded people in my music. Just for this album.

And of course, musically it gave an interesting result: new original music inspired by Prince. I am very happy with the outcome.

I could also play Bach, which is the best music ever, and people love it. And I do play it. But I wanted to play 'new' music.

Mission accomplished!

The CD is out and was presented during a concert at the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw.

Many Prince fans showed up and the hall was nicely filled. We made a sort of cross-over pop show with 'classical' contemporary music. We had a light man, sound guy and a director to make the show go smoothly. And I thnk it went smoothly. The concert overwhelmed me a bit and relied mostly on healthy automatism to keep a relaxed flow.

Afterwards I improvised with a DJ for which I even took a lesson with jazz saxophonist Jasper Staps.

I had a great time and I am already thinking about a sequal... Suggestions are very welcome!

Clarinet

I must admit, clarinet is not favourite instument.

But something changed that yesterday.

We played a concert with the Amstel Quartet yesterday, together with clarinettist Lars Wouters. We played the Weber clarinet Quintet (arr. By us for four saxes and clarinet), Wilson, where the Moorcocks Crow, Atlantica (without clarinet), Lars played Berio Sequenza IXb and we closed off with a choral and variation for sax 4tet and clarinet.

Lars played a wonderfull Berio, agile, smooth, colourful, free, creative and expressive. Maybe the piece is even better suited for clarinet than sax, although I hate to admit it...

The Weber is something completely different than we normally play. And ai have to be honest again. It takes me some effort to appreciate this type of music. But Lars sucked me into it. His playing was playful, rubato and extremely virtuoso. We never play this kind of operatic music. Except for maybe Demersseman and Singelée. So Lars had to help us et through this music and in the end we enjoyed playing it greatly!

We have played 'Where the Moorcocks Crow' by Ian Wilson several times before. The last time with my ex student Stefan de Wijs. The version with clarinet worked much better in my opinion. THe solo sax drowned in the quartet but the clarinet holds up his own. A beautiful piece. We should record this soon, with Lars

Closing off with he Bach was fantastic. i never imagined that the combination of four saxes and clarinet would sound so good!

Thanks Lars!

New CD almost out

Wow, my new cd is almost out.

I alway forget how much work it is to make a cd. It's not the most fun work, to be honest. Well the studying, recording, that's all good. But editing and listening to it over and over again... I can't hear it anymore and after several times hearing it, I get so insecure about what I am hearing. My ears change in the process and now I have no idea if it's even a good cd.

I can't wait to present it on 8 February in the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw. Come and check it out!
