Saxomania

Het17e-eeuwse gebouw is enkele decennia terug ingrijpend gerenoveerd.

Vier Baritons blazen drieluik

The seven chakra's, voor strijkkwartet.

Loops

Ties Mellema en de Iersecomponist Ian Wilson gaan wat men noemt “way back”.

Q&A: Getting composers to write for you

Yet another question: how can we get composers to write a quartet piece for us? How to start collaboration with institutions to get money? Other ways of getting money for such projects?

God question yet again!

Getting composers to write for us is an important of the saxophone practice. We play a relatively new instrument, and most of us feel we have to contribute to the development of composed music in general. I do as well.

The most effective way for us to commission new pieces was just asking your fellow students at the conservatory to write for you. These students are the famous composers of the future and if you look around well enough you will find interesting composers before anyone else does. This is perhaps the most interesting way to commission new pieces. At school composers need experience to write for existing ensembles and the ensembles, especially ensembles like saxophone quartets, need new pieces. Well actually, by now of course there is plenty of repertoire for us to last a life time. But I think it will always be a part playing the saxophone that we are interested in new music and want to mean something in the development of composed music.

Also, after the conservatory this is still a way to get composers to write for you. A lot of times the compensation we offer is a number of guaranteed performances and maybe a CD recording.

With the more famous composers this might become more difficult. You could try the Rascher approach: Get a meeting with a composer and play for him/her. If you play well enough, the composer will offer to write a piece for you. If the composer asks you if he/she can write a piece for you then the situation is different of course. In that case, depending on the situation, you might be able to ask a favor from the composer: if you learn to play his/her piece, can the composer arrange a concert for you where you play this? Then in return, you could offer to play it at an X number of concerts as well.

Then there is the money way of course! In Holland we have one important fund that gives most commissions. They were cut heavily last year, so we can rely on them less the coming time. We did commission a piece by Michael Torke with the help of a befriended saxophone quartet, the New Century Saxophone Quartet. We each chipped in half of the money. We had to do this, because the Dutch fund will not commission by non-Dutch composers.
There are some ways to get this money together. In the beginning, when we received money from playing concerts, we used to deduct the costs first and then divide by 5. Four parts for each of the players and the rest goes to the quartet. This was a very effective way to finance our projects, like commissions and CD recordings.
Now we are experimenting with cultural entrepreneurship. I cannot say much about this yet, because we just started...

Mijn top 5 fotografen (Dutch only)

Here we go:

Daido Moriyama
Saul Leiter
Martin Parr
Joel Meyerowitz
Andre Kertesz

Over flabbergasted gesproken.

Kunt u mijn bovenstaande vragen beantwoorden?

Ties Mellema

Q&A: how much should you practice with your group?

We are trying to study chamber music. How often and how long would you practise together as a quartet in one week? We are not sure about the relation practise time in quartet and by yourself...

Hi there!

Good question. When we started out we rehearsed whenever we thought we should and whenever we needed it. We were working on basic skills and pieces, so we needed a lot. We wanted to give every chord the time it needed to tune, we wanted everything to be together, sync vibrato, articulation, discuss, make plans. In practice we practiced almost every day. Now it's much less. But still several times a week whenever we need. For example, we would study almost every morning together working on our 4tet chops (and at the same time working on your personal skills: do not forget this!) and the rest of the day is yours. This becomes easier after the first year of course, when you have less other courses.

Our rehearsals have almost always been 4 hours. Sometimes we did rehearsal weekends and just rehearsed all day. But 4 hours in general seems to be a good guideline.

It also depends on whatever you want with your chamber music group. What level do you want to reach, what do you want to do. You should talk about this and draw conclusions if there are differences in the group. Which can be hard. But remember: it will be your work. It is not an orchestra that you join, with their own rules. You guys are the boss, you make your own rules, and you break them when you need to. Be flexible, kind, and draw lines for yourself. Make good appointments about what you are going to do, who does what... etc.

Q&A first edition, 27 October 2012

Brad Carman asked.

1. Doubling. (Pros and cons). 2.Balancing general practice with performance preparation. 3. Pros and cons of specialization. 4. Managing a profitable career (with and without government assistance. What it takes...how many different components, etc.)

Hi Brad, here we go, hard to answer everything, but I did my best.

1. Well, hard question, and very specific for your region. Here in Holland and Europe we do not need to do it perse, but it can be handy if you're looking for gigs.

Pros: more opportunities for gigs, obviously, as long as you're in the right network. Usually doubling comes together with combining classical with jazz. Like the sax section in the Metropole Orchestra.

It can be a lot of fun as well, I imagine. But I am not a doubler. I live of playing the classical saxophone only, in classical gigs. Something like 80-90 percent of my income comes from playing. The rest is teaching.

Cons: Less time to focus on your chops on your specialty, in my case the sax. At school I aimed at being fluent in all saxophones. That was my form of doubling. But in my case there was an artistic reason. The repertoire for sax is limited. And I did not want to limit the rep even more by just playing 1 or two saxes. Tomorrow I am playing a recital and I am playing three saxes. Honestly, I am not so keen on including the soprano, but I won't leave rep out because it's on the soprano. I just need more time to prep myself because it is not something I do regularly.

I am someone who wants to go for it 300%. Doubling means less time to invest in becoming fluent on the thing I want most.

But again, this is from a European viewpoint.

2. At the conservatory, in the first year the balance is like 90%-10% general practice-performance prep. The second year it's something like 80-20, third 70-30, fourth 60-40. Give or take 10%!

Right now, for me it's 100% performance prep, just because I do not have the time to do general rehearsal. But my performance practice is also general practice. I am working on developing my chops and musicality at the same time.

When I was injured in 2008 it was 75-25, because I had to relearn the technique of the right hand...

It is based on what you need. Find out what you need. For example: legato is very easy, right? So why does everyone practice scales legato? Well, to learn smooth transitions from one note to the other. Ok, so what after this? Try attacking a low B flat, keep it for 4 beats, have two beats rest, then play a low c, not, that's hard!

If you have nothing to work on that really needs to get better, you should go see a good movie, work on your hobby or work in the garden... But I am sure that in school there's enough to do!

3. If you are specializing you are aiming on a margin. If you specialize in contemporary American music, you know there s very small market for you. But if you market yourself wisely you are the one that small market calls if they need someone who can play that type of music very well.

I did not specialize, and till this day I am wondering whether I should change this... I am someone who likes to do everything and only specializes on the short term (several weeks max) and then goes on to the next thing.

4. Wow, if I would know that one! :-)

Well, I live of playing, I am privileged, but I worked my ass off to get there. I studied hard and tried to be the best. I made sure I was and am at every network meeting that seems valuable for me. I talk to people easily. I created a network and still working on it. But I can tell you that the pro network you create at school is the most important one you will ever have, career-wise. Be very careful with this, invest time and effort and make the right choices. Know where you're going and speak to those people who can bring you closer.

Do not always say yes, but say yes a lot. You do not have to do everything. Create your own work and opportunities. There is no market for us, we have to create it. Abstract right? Well, it will always remain so... Can't help it. You have to find your way and you should always be prepared to choose new paths.

The path your teacher chose might not be the path for you. Find your own way. Really....

A former co-student of mine, Ralph van Raat, is a very succesful performer of contemporary music. If he would have asked advice about his future career people would have never told him to specialize in Jarret, Stokhausen, Boulez, Ives... That would be like digging your own professional grave. But he did it. He plays all around the world. He is passionate about what he does and people know this... They want to listen to him because he has something to say.

All the best,

Ties

Video blog 29 Sept 2012: Lee Konitz @Bimhuis

First time I saw this legend live, very impressive. He played fresh and creative. Not as virtuoso as he used to be but the band compensated!

I went with a friend after going to relaxing sauna bath. The ideal circumstances to enjoy a concert. And we liked it. Not that I was really thrilled about it, but it was very inspiring to see this man enjoying himself on stage, both as a musician and person. And being creative! He selected fantastic musicians to tour with him. He was not afraid of being outplayed, and he shouldn't be. The band carried and made him sound even better.

Fresh from the press: Cellist Charles Watt will write a new piece for him and Ties for cello and barisax for the 6 November Splendor concert

Review of the Lars Mlekusch mouthpieces for plastic Legere reeds

Long awaited, here it finally is!

In 2011 I received an email from saxophonist Lars Mlekusch that his new mouthpieces were released and produced by Playnick. I try a lot of new mouthpieces that come out, but this one caught my special interest right from the beginning. The mouthpiece is produced especially for Legere plastic reeds! Some years ago I tried Legere plastic reeds and this was the first time I actually felt that plastic reeds could be the future, in my lifetime. But they weren't quite there yet, from my standpoint at least (please put this last remark after every opinion you read below :-)
When Mr. Mlekusch announced his new ML1 and ML2 mouthpieces I was very excited. Could this mouthpiece be the missing link? Could this mean no more hassle with wooden reeds anymore?! I'd give a lot to have to miss the troubles of dealing with wooden reeds.
Mr. Mlekusch is an excellent player himself. If anyone could design such a mouthpiece and endorse it, it would be him.
I replied to the email and tried to order some samples at Playnick. This took some time, and I heard nothing anymore. Apparantly, I heard from somebody else, they had to wait for a new batch of Legere reeds. But after some months I decided to email again. Now somebody else emailed me back and some weeks later I had the package in the mail, with some Legere reeds in different strenghts. When they get around to do it, they do it well!
Initially, I wanted to just go ahead and choose the best one from four mothpieces they send. So I started practicing on the best mouthpiece-reed combination I found. It was after my holidays so I figured I might as well play on a different set up because I had to get back in shape anyway. And I remember the revelation when I played my friend's and colleague's, Gordan Tudor,  LM1 when I was in Croatia: that was a great moutpiece reed combination. The sound was a bit flat and somewhat uninspiring. But I remember myself having the same opinion about the AL3 and not using the first two years after I bought it. When I actually started practicing on it within some months I found my own sound again on the AL3. Which was worth it, the AL3 makes my life so much easier now: more good reeds, better legato, easier articulation (except for staccato, that's harder) and intonation.
Well, to not make this a review about the AL3: after some days of practicing on the LM1 with 2 3/4 reeds in August I decided to go back to my own set up for my upcoming solo concert. This was quite a disappointment... But I couldn't do it. First of all, There are very large differences between the mouthpieces, probably due to the type of production (this is the same with Selmer, because of the production process, all the mouthpieces they make are very different, which can be an advantage!), as opposed to Vandoren, which is more constant in quality. I am sure Mr. Tudor's mouthpiece was much better (for me) and this was what I was expecting. I had an important solo recital coming up the next week and in spite of my wish to play this on the LM1 with plastic reeds, I had to go back.
I had my students try the samples and now one student plays the LM1 with 2 3/4 reeds and he sounds great on it, better than on his AL3. But for me, the LM1 (the samples I received from Playnick!) were too flat in sound. I guess they passed the border of giving up 'personality' and 'character' (like I felt I had to do with the AL3) to be able to play more easy.

I hope Mr. Mlekusch will keep developing these mouthpieces and listen to feedback. As well as Legere. I will not hesitate a minute when the time is there to switch to plastic reeds. And it will be within my lifetime! Reed my lips :-)

This was a great concert. Gerardo is a great percussionist with great timing, not only on percussion. He's a fantastic entertainer as well.

I wish he would have played at my festival: Uitgast, but unfortunately he canceled at the last moment. I was very happy to have seen him some weeks later at the Bimhuis, Holland's nicest concert hall.

Nieuwsbrief Uitgast 2012

Nieuwsbericht  28 augustus 2012

Video blog 21-8-12: Impressions of Uitgast

Some impressions of Uitgast Festival, which I programmed.

Some short videos of the Uitgast Festival. One of the highlights for me was Brand Attema trombone with Astrid Haring harp, Miguel Fiol Duran dance. This recital was honest and straightforward, the atmosphere was relaxed but focused. This type of music making should be what 'classical' music is about. It is about the music and the ambiance. Not about ego. Check them out, book them!

Martijn Padding wrote one his most beautiful pieces for this ensemble. It was inspired on the walk that Robert Schumann made every day in the mad house to the statue of Beethoven. Apparantly he walked extremely slow.

1, 2

And some more:

3, 4

The rest of the festival was also great. Erik Vloeimans was terribly inspiring. Also the chat I had with him after the concert.

The Ricciotti Ensemble had some space in their tour schedule to visit Uitgast as well. I used to play in this hippie youth orchestra. The audience loved them. They played an enthusiastic mix of classical, world and pop music: 1, 2, 3, 4

The day ended with Van Fan Fahre, a Belgian world music ensemble which got a lot of people on their feet.

First videoblog

Start of the new season 2012-2013, exciting stuff to happen. As well as my new videoblog. Check it out :-)

Here it is

Programs 2013-2014 in English

My new concert programs for the season 2013-2014. Enjoy! :-)

Programmes 2013-2014:

Ties Mellema (Saxophones) & Hans Eijsackers(piano)

'Jazz we can!'

Classical chamber music mixed with jazz and improvisation.Jazz and classical composers stepping out, over to the ‘other’ side: GeorgeGershwin, Ervin Schulhof, Martin Fondse, Tony Overwater, Edison Denisow, AndréJolivet and our own compositions!

The saxophone is predominantly known as a 'jazz instrument'.Meanwhile Ties Mellema won the Dutch Music Prize, the highest award andrecognition a Dutch classical musician can receive. But since his very firstnotes, there has been no divide between the various styles of music for Ties. When Ties and Hans started playing together, it turned out they shared thatview. Their trademark has become improvisation, which they place in betweenwritten out classical pieces.

'Romantic Sax'

The saxophone is a typical product, not only of theindustrial revolution, but of romance in particular. It is built to be able toplay long drawn out lines, filled with colour and feeling. Adolphe Sax had avision, and Ties and Hans have styled this into an entirely romantic programmefor saxophone and piano. And, as ever, they will comment on this by way of onthe moment improvisations.

Romantic sonatas by Brahms, Rachmaninov, Schumann, Beethovenand others.

'Minimal Ties'

Ties Mellema, solo saxophones

optionally with Niels Bijl, saxophones

Minimal music highlights from the saxophone repertoire. Golden oldies andcontemporary minimal music.

Terry Riley - Dorian Reeds
Philip Glass - Gradus
Ties Mellema - Minimal Impro
Ian Wilson - Ondes Ombragées
(for saxophone and LIVE recorded tape)
Eduardo Marturet - Canto Llano
(for saxophone and tape delay)

With Niels Bijl, saxophones

Marc Mellitis - Black
for two baritone saxophones
Philip Glass, Music in the Shape of a Square
for two soprano saxophones

'Shadows', Ties Mellema, solo saxophones

A poetical programme built up around the Irishman Ian Wilson and his OndesOmbragées, a piece in which the saxophonist records himself in the first halfand plays together with himself in the second half. The programme isbeautifully balanced and varied through the subtle use of electronics.
'Shadows' is Ties Mellema’s continuing quest to take the audience with him intohis musical world. Ties is always looking out for new pieces and sounds (for example, through the subtle use of electronics). In addition, composers are continuouslywriting for this versatile musician. Each concert has its unique place in Ties’development and growth as a musician and as a saxophonist.
Each programme is attuned to the space in which the concert will take place. The space is preferably used in an unconventional way.
There are two constants: the Irish composer Ian Wilson and Johann SebastianBach (Cello suite no. 3 or the Partita BWV 1013)

Sample programme:

Eduardo Marturet (1953) - Canto Llano
for saxophone and tape delay
Ian Wilson (1964) - Ondes Ombragées
for saxophone and LIVE recording and play-back
Luciano Berio (1925-2003) - Sequenza VIIb
for solo saxophone
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - Cello suite no. 1, 3 and/or Partita (orig.flute)
for saxophone
Jorrit Dijkstra - new work, written for Ties Mellema
for saxophone and electronics
Maarten Ornstein - Leap Frog (2011), written for Ties Mellema
for saxophone and electronics

'Princepiration'

Ties Mellema, saxophones
EnAccord, string quartet
Wilmar de Visser, double bass

Jorinde Keesmaat, director

A programme that premiered in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam in2012 in the series Tracks. The concert was highly commended and an outrightsuccess. Reason enough for Ties, EnAccord, Wilmar and Jorinde to continue. Theidea behind it is to create a programme with Prince and his music as the theme.

Contemporary composers (David Dramm, Maarten van Norden,Jorrit Dijkstra, and others) wrote pieces inspired by Prince’s work, most timesgroovy, funky and melodic, alternated with classical music, showing a clearlink to Prince’s music.

The target audience for this programme is: Prince fans withan open mind (a pleonasm!), young music lovers who find the stiffness ofclassical concerts difficult to get used to and music lovers in general.

The musicians use the space during the concert and give commentinformally on what they are doing. There is also enthusiastic interaction withthe audience in various informal ways.

More on Princepiration:
As a saxophonist, Ties Mellema is accustomed to playing all kinds of differentstyles during his concerts. One style that he has barely played during hiscareer, since he left the conservatory, is pop music, even though this type ofmusic formed a substantial part of his musical development as a teenager.
The most important pop artist during Mellema's puberty, was Prince. The suddenchanges in styles, from one album to the next, from one song to the next…. Evennow, way past puberty, Mellema’s fascination for this excellent artist remains.According to Mellema, Prince’s compositions are a match for many a classicalpiece.

Some quotes on Ties Mellema:

""A passionate plea to dust off your programming. If youare open to it: highly recommended!"" and ""Impressive"", ""abeautiful and sincere testimony"", ""...a concert both virtuoso andpoetic at once"", ""compelling"", ""…in the same way hecommented on other compositions meticulously and with humour."" and ""greatpower of persuasion"".

(Music Chamber Assen Foundation)

""Ties and Hans played an exceptional concert inNieuwkoop. The atmosphere Ties manages to create is remarkable; it comes notonly from his charming personality and his ability to engage with the audienceearly on. This atmosphere is created mainly by his command of the instrument andhis communicative way of playing. His choice of repertoire is refreshing and hesucceeds in drawing his audience into his world of sounds in a compellingmanner. Hans is indispensible as supporting partner. The audience in Nieuwkoopwas fascinated by the beautiful saxophone music with its endless timbres andpossibilities.""

(Music Chamber Foundation in Nieuwkoop)

“He is a phenomenal saxophonist, who fills the room with hisbeautiful tone alone, but also with the power of his musical personality”, “greatsubtlety” and “The great measure in which this duo is attuned to one anotherbecame apparent in an improvisation which, according to the pianist, led themto places they had never been together before.”

(Eindhovens Dagblad)

“One of the great virtuosos of this moment.”

'Jazz we can!'

Romantische sonates van o.a. vanBrahms, Rachmaninov, Schumann enBeethoven.

'Minimal Ties'

TiesMellema, solo saxofoons
optioneel met Niels Bijl,saxofoons

Minimal music highlights uit het saxofoonrepertoire.Oude krakers, en hedendaagse minimal music.

Terry Riley -Dorian Reeds
Philip Glass - Gradus
Ties Mellema - MinimalImpro
Ian Wilson - Ondes Ombragées
(voor saxofoon en LIVErecorded tape)
Eduardo Marturet - Canto Llano
(vor saxofoon entape delay)

Met Niels Bijl, saxofoons
Marc Mellitis -Black
voor twee baritonsaxofoons
Philip Glass, Music in theShape of a Square
voor twee sopraansaxofoons

'Shadows', TiesMellema, solo saxofoons

Voorbeeldprogramma:

Eduardo Marturet (1953) -Canto Llano
voor saxofoon en tape delay
Ian Wilson (1964) -Ondes Ombragées
voor saxofoon en LIVE recording enplay-back
Luciano Berio (1925-2003) - Sequenza VIIb
voorsolosaxofoon
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - Cellosuite no. 1,3 en/of Partita (orig. fluit)
voor saxofoon
Jorrit Dijkstra –Grapevine Loop, gescrheven voor Ties Mellema
voor saxofoon enelektronica
Maarten Ornstein - Leap Frog (2011), geschreven voorTies Mellema
voor saxofoon en elektronica

'Princepiration'

TiesMellema, saxen
En Accord, strijkkwartet
Wilmar de Visser,contrabas

Jorinde Keesmaat,regie

Enkele citaten over over Ties Mellema:

Hans is daarbij onmisbaar alsondersteunende partner.

(Stichting Kamermuziek in Nieuwkoop)

Embouchure

The saxophone embouchure is more about doing as little as possible.

I find myself often telling my students to do less when playing the sax. When they enter the conservatory they went through a development that usually meant they squeeze the reed, play with  tight throat, and pull as many muscles as they can in their bodies. For me, playing the sax is about relaxing. Only using the muscles you need. And the good thing is that the body knows what to do. Whenever a teacher tells us how to hold our body and embouchure we start doing something. Which is good to try things out, but what happens many times is that we
keep doing this. Our learning curve should be aimed at not having to do and think about the things we learned. Things should come easy, without thinking. This will change your way studying immensely. You will study more but exit the practice studio refreshed!

HCB

I read this Wikipedia article about Henri Cartier Bresson, see below.

Very inspiring man, even more inspiring photos. Photography has grasped like nothing before. Especially being out on the streets. Using the old school methods on a digital SLR.

Currently I am experimenting with zone focus and later on I will try hyperfocal focus, using infinity...

Tomorrow it's off to the States, I will take my camera!

Cartier-Bresson exclusively used Leica 35 mm rangefinder cameras equipped with normal 50 mm lenses or occasionally a wide-angle for landscapes.[11] He often wrapped black tape around the camera's chrome body to make it less conspicuous. With fast black and white films and sharp lenses, he was able to photograph almost by stealth to capture the events. No longer bound by a huge 4×5 press camera or an awkward medium format twin-lens reflex camera, miniature-format cameras gave Cartier-Bresson what he called ""the velvet hand [and] the hawk's eye.""[citation needed] He never photographed with flash, a practice he saw as ""[i]mpolite...like coming to a concert with a pistol in your hand.""[11]

He believed in composing his photographs in the viewfinder, not in the darkroom. He showcased this belief by having nearly all his photographs printed only at full-frame and completely free of any cropping or other darkroom manipulation.[1] Indeed, he emphasized that his prints were not cropped by insisting they include the first millimetre or so of the unexposed clear negative around the image area resulting, after printing, in a black border around the positive image.

Cartier-Bresson worked exclusively in black and white, other than a few unsuccessful attempts in color. He disliked developing or making his own prints.[1] He said: ""I've never been interested in the process of photography, never, never. Right from the beginning. For me, photography with a small camera like the Leica is an instant drawing.""[12]

He started the tradition of testing new camera lenses by taking photographs of ducks in urban parks. He never published the images but referred to them as 'my only superstition' as he considered it a 'baptism' of the lens.[13]

Cartier-Bresson is regarded as one of the art world's most unassuming personalities. He disliked publicity and exhibited a ferocious shyness since his days in hiding from the Nazis during World War II. Although he took many famous portraits, his own face was little known to the world at large (which presumably had the advantage of allowing him to work on the street in peace). He dismissed others' applications of the term ""art"" to his photographs, which he thought were merely his gut reactions to moments in time that he had happened upon.

The simultaneous recognition, in a fraction of a second, of the significance of an event as well as the precise organization of forms which gives that event its proper expression... . In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject. The little human detail can become a leitmotif.
—Henri Cartier-Bresson[14]

I am priveleged!

I get to play so many different concerts in this time with so many great people. And lots of cartes blanches. I can pick my own repertoire, the form of the concert. And I am loving it.

In the mean time I am taking pictures with my lomography cameras.

What more could I want?

Het resultaat: 'Amstel Tracks NOW'.
